Tuesdays with Morrie (Trust)

By Mitch Albom

"'You see,' he says to the girl, 'you closed your eyes. That was the difference. Sometimes you cannot believe what you see, you have to believe what you feel. And if you are ever going to have other people trust you, you must feel that you can trust them, too -- even when you're in the dark. Even when you're falling.'"

It's easier to trust God or other people or yourself when you feel secure, protected...but when you are falling, and your life feels like it's falling apart, and you've never needed to trust more, to feel faith, to feel secure...but it's even harder now because it seems so much farther to fall. And in this moment you don't have your usual happiness or confidence or comfort to cushion the blow. Yet, when I do (take that step into faith/trust anyway)...I find a secret strength.

I have felt strength flow into me like sunshine into a cold room as I open the shutters. Why do I block out the light? I have the blinds for a reason: to protect me when it's night. But I frequently forget to open them to the light, and so I live in the cold, meanwhile longing for the warmth and light that's within my grasp, but forgotten.
